Slow Wi-Fi is almost never “the phone is bad.” It is interference, a dying router, a single AP covering too many rooms, or a $15 repeater that halves your speed. Android “Wi-Fi booster” APKs are worse. They cannot raise radio power. Many are adware. Do not install them.
Use the checks below on laptops, phones, and a Steam Deck. Cloud games (Luna, Xbox Cloud, Remote Play) need a clean 5 GHz or 6 GHz hop more than they need a new handheld.
1. Stop buying junk repeaters
Cheap single-band repeaters sit on the same channel as the router and cut throughput. If one box cannot cover the apartment, replace the network with mesh, not a plug-in egg. A tri-band Wi-Fi 6E system such as the TP-Link Deco XE75 (3-pack) gives the Deck and phones a backhaul that is not fighting your Netflix TV. Place nodes in the open, not inside a metal TV stand.
2. Reboot the router on purpose
ISP gateways leak memory and drop Wi-Fi for days. Power-cycle the modem and router, wait two minutes, then reconnect. If the WAN light is dead, the problem is the ISP, not your Steam Deck.
3. Move the router off the noise
Keep it off cordless-phone bases, microwave ovens, big speakers, and stacked mesh of USB 3 hard drives (they spray 2.4 GHz noise). Height helps. A closet behind a mirror does not. 2.4 GHz travels through walls and is crowded. 5 GHz and 6 GHz are faster in the same room. Put the Deck and the AP on the same floor when you stream.
4. One extra AP, done right
A second router in AP mode, wired back to the first with Ethernet, beats another wireless hop. If you cannot run cable, mesh with a dedicated backhaul band is the compromise. Do not daisy-chain three cheap extenders. For a single device at a desk, a USB-C Ethernet adapter on the Deck or laptop removes Wi-Fi from the problem entirely.
5. Channel, band, and firmware
In the router admin page, set 5 GHz to an unused channel (or leave auto if the firmware is recent). Enable WPA3 or WPA2-AES. Update firmware. Disable old 802.11b if every client is modern. Guest networks often force 2.4 GHz. Do not put game streaming on Guest.
Steam Deck and cloud gaming
Remote Play, Luna, and Xbox Cloud punish packet loss more than raw megabits. Same SSID, 5 GHz, no VPN, no download running in Desktop Mode. If you already own a Steam Deck dock, use its Ethernet jack for Chiaki or cloud sessions. That test tells you in thirty seconds whether the ISP is fine and the radio path is the villain.
